• 3.1 The Nature of Words
  • 3.1.1 What is a word?
    • 1.不随意拆分；2.有意义；3.最小的 free form=独立出现
      • 词在音系意义上可以独立出现，因为一个词代表一个没有停顿的音系区域。
      • 词在结构层面可以独立出现，我们不能在词中间加入另一个词。
      • 词在语法层面可以单独出现，词是填充话语中一个词类位置的最小填充单位。
    • Morpheme 语素/词素 ，is specially important in helping us define "word".And a morpheme can be understood as the minimal unit of language that has its own meaning.
    • A word including only one morpheme is a simple word,while complex word contains more than one morphem
    • Lexeme 词位
      • A lexeme can therefore be understand as a family of words that differ only in their grammmatical endings.Such as number,case,tense ,participle form, etc.
  • 3.1.2 Content words实义词 and Fuction Words功能词
    • 实义词包括 名词 、动词、形容词、副词，实义词库不断增加，属于Open class words 开放词类
    • 功能词包括冠词 、代词（antecedent先行语）、连接词、指示词、助动词、介词、从句连接词 。功能词较为稳定，又称 Closed class words封闭词类
    • 实义词来表达实体，性质和事件。功能词一方面帮我们精确这些意义，另一方面将这些实义词串起来构成符合语法的句子。
    • 功能词属于语法体系中的核心层分
• 3.2 Types of Morphemes语素/词素
  • Free Morphemes自由语素：可以独立成词的语素 eg：popular，teach
  • Bound Morphemes 黏着语素 不能独立成词的语素 eg：ise，er
  • When a word is formed,there is always a morpheme that serves as the root,which is the base of the word.eg：the root of enable is able,(free root 自由词根) the root of astronomy is astro（bound root 粘着词根）
  • Stem 词干 formed by a root and an extra bound morpheme,which can be either an independent word,or a base to which an extra bound morpheme can be added.Such as : root-construct stem--construction stem---constructional
  • Affix词缀
    • prefix 前缀
    • Suffix 后缀
    • infix 中缀：必须插入到一个词素中间
    • circumfix 环缀：环缀既有前缀又有后缀的特征-前后加缀的特征

• 3.3 Morphological Processes形态变化
  • 3.3.1 Devivation 派生
    • 在已有词位上添加词缀构成新的词位的形态变化。
    • 改变已有词位的词性，少部分不改变词性 eg possible --impossible
    • 词类标记唯一的功能就是改变词位的词性
    • 转类指一个词在不改变的情况下，有二种以上的词性。eg ：email =v/n
  • 3.3.2 Compounding 复合词
    • Attributive Compounding 修饰型复合词：两个组成部分之间是修饰关系，一个是修饰语（modifier），一个是中心语（head）eg：windmill，lowlife
    • Coordinative Comepounding 并列型复合词，两个组成部分的地位是完全平等的，互相不存在修饰关系。teacher-student 师生关系
    • Subordinative Compounding从属型复合词：两个组成部分中，通常有一个被认为是论元（Argument） --通常主语和宾语（有宾语的前提下）是动词的论元。 eg：John drove a truck=====truck- driver货车司机
  • 3.3.3 Inflection屈折
    • -s 第三人称单数现在时
    • --ed 过去式
    • -ing 进行时
    • ---en 过去分词
    • --s 复数
    • --er 比较级
    • --est 最高级
    • 屈折词缀仅仅是语法的要求
    • 屈折比派生更能产
    • 屈折构词绝不改变原词位的词类
  • 3.3.4次要形态变化
    • Blending 截塔：将两个词位各自的一部分拼接起来构成新词，且被拼接的两个成分均不是语素。 such as ： breakfast+lunch=brunch早午餐
    • Backformation 逆构词法 peddle are backformations of peddler.
    • Clipping 缩词法 refrigerator===fridge
    • Acronyms 大写 World Trade Organization ===WTO
