情态动词(Modal verb),本身有一定的词义,表示语气的单词。但是情态动词不能独立作谓语,只能和动词原形一起构成谓语。情态动词用在行为动词前,表示说话人对这一动作或状态的看法或主观设想。 情态动词的含义虽然数量不多,但用途广泛,英文中常见的有: can (could), may (might), must, need, ought to, dare (dared), shall (should), will (would)。

过去的能力
could、was/were able to
肯定句中could泛指过去的一般能力,表示过去做某件具体事情的能力不用could,否定句没有限制

should, ought to,had better
Should, ought to表示建议或劝告某人“应该”做某事
You should/ought to give up smoking.你应该戒烟了。

must, have to 表示有必要或义务做某事
You must/have to be back before 10 o’clock.你必须十点前回来。
表示过去的必须

don't have to表示不需要做某事

must 的否定形式
must not/mustn't表示禁止做某事
You must not use a calculator during this exam.
need not/needn't表示不必做某事
You needn't do it at once.
表意愿、决心
Will/would 表示意愿(willingness) 即愿意做某事
-Will/ would you please help me?Yes, I will
表示客气请求时用would you, 但回答时用will, 不用would
表示过去的“意愿”或过去不愿意做某事,用would ,would not

Will/would 表示决心(determination) 即坚持做某事
