Honour
American poet, linguist, educator, dramatist, translator, travel writer, and one of America's fireside poets.
Honorary degrees from prestigious colleges and universities, including Cambridge and Oxford.
He is one of the most successful writers in the United States and his reputation in England is on a par with Tennyson's.
The first American poet to achieve a good international reputation. He received a private audience with Queen Victoria.
A bust of him was placed in Poets' Corner at Westminster Abbey, the first American writer to be so honored.
The first English poem translated into Chinese was Longfellow's A Psalm of Life.
Life

Born in Portland, Maine.
His grandfather was a member of the American Revolutionary War and Congress.
His father, the best lawyer in Portland, sent him to Bowdoin College to study law.
At school, he showed great aptitude for languages.
1820
Longfellow published his first poem in a local newspaper in 1820 at the age of 13.
1821
he entered Bodoin College, where he was a classmate of Nathaniel Hawthorne.
1825
graduated, traveled to France, Spain, Italy, and Germany, studying the languages and literature of these countries. (Mostly romantic literature.)
1829
became professor of modern philology and librarian at Bedoin College.
1831
He married Mary Sture Porter of Portland while teaching at Bowdoin University.
1833-1835
wrote a romantic prose work called "The Overseas Journey" based on Owen's "Notes on Seeing and Learning".
1835
went to Europe mainly to improve his German. During his second trip to Europe, his wife died of miscarriage.
1836
became professor of linguistics at Harvard University.
Then he married Fanny Appleton, a Boston heiress whom he had known at home.
They had six children.
1838
first collection of poems, published, was called "The Night Sings."
1839
published his romantic prose work, Schuperion, a prose saga reflecting his sojourn in Germany.
The book's explicit description of his meeting with his wife strained their relationship.
1841
Ballads and Others was published.
1842
published a lyrical poem called "The Psalms of Slavery"
1845
edited and published the book European Poets and Poems.
1847
published the poem Ivan Jilin
which described the mistreatment of the French-Canadian colonists by the British army and expressed his deep feelings.
1854
resigned from the Harvard faculty to devote himself to writing.
1855
The Song of Hiawatha was published, which established the author as a poet.
1858
published The Proposal of Miles Standish
1861
Mrs. Longfellow died from a fatal burn while perming her daughter's hair.
That same year, the country descended into civil war, and his younger son, Charlie, went off to fight without his consent.

Dante's translation of the Divine Comedy was published.

traveled to Europe again, where he was awarded various degrees by Cambridge and Oxford, and received cordially by Queen Victoria.
