Life
Born in Concord in 1817.
He graduated from Harvard in 1837.
When he studied there, Thoreau walked 18 miles to Boston to hear Emerson's lecture.
He used to live in Emerson’s house for more than a year, doing chores and serving as a general handyman. What’s the most important is ab sorbing many of the Emerson's ideas.
In 1845, he began a two-year residence at Walden Pond. And in 1854, Walden, the superb book that came out of this two-year experiment.
In 1846, he was arrested for failure to pay a trifling sum in taxes.
In 1849, he published his famous essay "Civil disobedience"because he disapproved of slavery and of the government's conduct of the Mexican War.
He hold that "No man should violate his conscience at the command of government.
In 1862, at his 45 year-old, he died. He spent most of his life in or near Concord.

1.Thoreau employs metaphor, pun and biblical and mythological allusions. In the example, Thoreau uses his imagination, comparing t he lake to the eyes, the trees to the eyelashes, and the mountains to eyebrows.
2. The sentences are direct and forceful. There are many proverbial expressions in the book. He qustioned those who think rigidly and always follow the footsteps of others. These words are easy to understand and concise.
3. From this quotation, Thoreau uses many humorous and ironic expressions. The book aims to warn people not to plead for material wealth and ignore the spirit pursuit.
