A trade union is an organisation which aims toprotect the interests of its worker members,i.e.theirterms and conditions of employment,including pay.

Factors affecting the strength of trade unions
Trade unions act as a means of communication and negotiationbetween employers and employees through a process calledcollective bargaining. This occurs when a trade union representative,who is voted intotheir position by union members,negotiates on behalf of theworkers for better pay and conditions of work. A collective voice is more powerful than each worker negotiatingindividually with the employer. Collective bargaining is the process of trade union representatives negotiating on behalf of their worker memberswith employer representatives for better pay and conditions.
The claim for higher wages in the collective bargaining process isnormally based on one or more of the following: >a rise in the cost of living due to inflation (see Chapter 26),whichreduces the real wage of trade union members >workers in comparable occupations who have received a wageincrease increased profits of the firm and industry as a whole,justifying ahigher return for labour services >an increase in the productivity of labour,further justifying anincrease in wages.
