• Subject-verb agreement with -s - ending nouns
  • 1.The name of the disease and the name of the game ending in -s
    • Often used as a singular noun：arthritis，bronchitis，rickets，mumps，diabetes
    • Can be used as singular or plural：measles，rickets
    • The noun of the game name is usually singular：Darts,Maebles
    • When darts，marbles etc is used in the sense of darts or bullets used in these games, it is used in the plural.
  • 2.The name of the subject ending in -ics
    • The singular is used when referring to a specific subject, but can be used in the plural when referring to a meaning other than the subject.
  • 3.Geographical name ending with -s
    • If it is a country name, use the singular number.
    • It is usually used in the plural if it is not a country but a geographical name such as an archipelago, a mountain range, a channel, or a waterfall.
  • 4.Other nouns ending in -s
    • Usually used as a plural:scissors，pincers，glasses，shorts，trousers，suspenders....If there is a unit word, the single and plural forms of the unit word determine the single and plural forms of the verb.
    • A few nouns can be either singular or plural:whereabouts/dramatics...
    • A noun ending in -ings, usually plural.Exception: "tidings" can be used in both singular and plural
    • Subsequent singular and plural forms of verbs depend on whether these nouns are used as singular or plural:barracks,headquarters,means...
    • A few nouns have different meanings in the singular and plural:odds,remains...

  • 1.Often used in the plural.
    • police,people,cattle.militia,poultry,vermin...
  • 2.Usually used as an uncountable noun
    • foliage,machinery,equipment,furniture,merchandise
  • 3.Can be singular or plural
    • audience,committee,class,crew,family,government,public
    • Consider the group as a whole and use a singular verb.
    • When focusing on the members of a group, the verb is plural.
  • A committee of etc+Plural noun
    • If the subject is made of “a committee of/a panel of/a(the)board of+plural noun”, the verb that follows is usually singular.
