• 一、英语的理解与翻译的几种情形
  • ⒈直译
    • Salaries have barely kept abreast of inflation. 工资增长仅勉强跟上通货膨胀。
  • 2.查词典
    • These are "luxury" houses thrown up cheek-by-jowl, with no obvious buyers. 这些匆匆建成的一栋栋密密而推的“豪宅”显然无人问津。
      • 原句中有 cheek-by-jowl这样一个人们或许不太熟悉的表达，但在英汉词典里可查得其意思：“紧紧地挨（排）列在一起”。
  • 3.灵活翻译
    • The country is experiencing its gray wave. 该国正经历“银发浪潮”。/“老龄潮”正向该国涌来。
    • Top investment bankers earn telephone-number salaries. Even their junior colleagues earn fat pay-cheques. 投资银行最高层人员的薪金可以达到电话号码的位数，即便是低等级的职员收入也颇丰厚。
      • 英文原句中的 earn telephone-number salaries 是个难确定的概念。是上万元光，还是几十万元呢，甚至是上百万元呢？因为电话号码的位数可以是五位数、六位数，也可以是七位数和八位数。
• 二、英语新词或表达的溯源或揣摩
  • 派生词
    • infopreneur 这个词可译“信息企业家 ”。这是因为information 在现代英语中已频频被缩写成 info，如 Your info is my info.（你我信息共享）、info-highway（信息高速公路）等。而 preneurs 则是 cntrepreneurs（企业家）的部分拼写。
      • micropolitan area 城市式小区 megalopolises 特大型城市 satphone 卫星电话 cyberdate (cyberdating) 网络约会 online courtship 网上求爱 to dress provocatively 穿着极富性感/穿得很暴露 children born with cleft lips and palates 天生兔唇与腭裂的小孩子
  • 旧词新意
    • 一、英语中 czar （tsar） 是“俄国沙皇”之意，现却常用来指一国政府部门的“主管”。
      • a movie czar意为“电影部门的主管”，a publicity czar 则可指“宣传部门主管”。
    • 二、“复制人”、“克隆”在英语中的表达：
      • It's a horrendous crime to make a Xerox of someone. 复制人是骇人听闻的犯罪行为。
      • 请注意动词clone与介词 into 搭配的用法。
    • 三、因特网上和电子邮件系统中的垃圾邮件可以称为 spam：
      • Spam-unsolicited commercial e-mail typically hawking get-rich-quick schemes or naughty pictures— is flooding the Internet. 不自来的电子广告信函充斥因特网。这些信函不是兜售各种快速致富经，就是些鸟七八糟的图像。
      • 名词 spam 的原义是“令人讨厌、令人恼怒的事物”。
    • 四、friendly 作为构词后缀正大行其道：
      • 作为一个较新的构词后缀，friendly（意为“对…⋯友好的/有利的/适应的/无害的）近些年来似乎量现越来越活跃的态势。
    • 五、cousin,sister 等用于比较或类比的情景：
      • At research-oriented universities like Standford, teaching has become a poor stepchild to the reputation-enhancing work in the lab or in the library. 在像斯坦福那样的研究型大学里，蹲在实验室或泡园书馆搞研究可以提高知名度。相比之下，教学工作就颇不受重视。
    • 六、“亏损”，“抓大放小”、“与国际接轨”等说法对应的英语表达：
      • These are the money-hemorrhaging state-owned industries. 这是一些亏损的国营企业。
      • “抓大放小”的表达法，可供参考。 Grabbing the big, letting go the small. Grasp the large, release the small. Thousands of small firms will be cast loose by the turn of the century. Take a tight grip of the big ones and let loose the small ones. Seize the large and release the small.
      • “与国际接轨”英语的多种表述： to synchronize with the world to accord with international norms We will gradually move towards international practice. Efforts are being made to bring China's trade system in line with the prevailing trade system of the world.
